Review Policy

Our Policy is a lot longer than it used to be and now covers Self Published, Unsolicited Books, Reviewed Books (Their Life After Review) and eBooks - so please read on as this applies to ALL books.

Policy...

We review books of all fiction genres with a few exceptions and are happy to receive requests from publishers or authors. With non fiction our willingness to review is more limited but we get excited about gardening, cookery, DIY, knitting , crafts and industrial heritage - but contact us and we can always say no.

Before we agree to take a book for review we will try to decide who will read it by looking for everything we can find about it. We may say "No Thank You" simply because of the genre but we have a TBR pile that currently stands at about 150 books and may so "No" simply because we are overloaded.

ANY book published by an established publisher took a lot of time in editing and investment in producing and distributing by the publisher, therefore it must have some qualities that the publisher felt was worth the gamble, so if we decide to read it we will always give a constructive review. "It's dire" is not a review and it fails to recognise what the publisher saw. We may not like it and we will try to say why. We may love it and will also say so.

"Self Published" books...

There are a huge amount of self published books around and these tend to be, although are not exclusively, ebooks. Self publication is relatively inexpensive and most of us believe we can tell a brilliant story. We can't all be right. The effect of this is that everyone is looking for that one review that will get them recognised. I would stress that we have read some very good books of this type but we have also started to read some that will never be finished. Please don't be offended if we say "No" - your book is special although we aren't in a position to help you but good luck with your project. We MAY say "Yes". BUT... if we agree to review it and then find we cannot give a constructive review we will notify you that we can't review it and we will not be prepared to discuss the 'why'.

If you would still like us to review a book then contact us through the contact link above.

Unsolicited books...

Most books we receive are unsolicited and they prick our conscience. We try to recycle everything, throw little away and generally avoid waste so when a  book comes through the door we like to do the decent thing and review it - but there isn't always time. If we agree to a review then it will get prioritised on the reading pile and rightly so; however, if it's unsolicited then it is very possible it will not get a review. We would much rather agree to reviews so that we can minimise waste and reduce costs to the sender.

Reviewed books (Their Life After Review)...

Many books when reviewed are moved onto the creaking bookshelves - these tend to be the best that suited us and the ones we want to read again some time - TIME PERMITTING. But the shelves are finite and we have limited space so the others are found new homes - but only after a few months later than the publication date. New homes may be friends or family or they may be Freecycle, school fairs, charity shops or Book Crossing. Another home we have recently found for some of the books is school reading support projects. If you have a problem with any of these then please say so.

eBooks...

We are now the owners of a kindle and are accepting a small number of eBooks - BUT not PDFs. Please ensure you make it clear if you are offering a hard copy or an ebook.
